Off the pitch, Piqué calms Puyol down. On the pitch, the older man gives his playing partner hell if his intensity drops for a split second.

There is nearly a decade in age between them, a world of difference in their upbringings, a six-inch gap in height, radical differences in their style, haircuts, personalities and life experience – and yet they have forged a remarkable bond.

Remember when:

Cheney was left off the U.S.’s 2008 Olympic roster but was added as a last-minute replacement when Wambach broke her leg in the team’s final warm-up game. At home with her parents in Indianapolis, watching the game and packing to go back to UCLA for summer classes, Cheney saw Wambach get hurt. “She’ll be fine,” Cheney told her parents. Later that night, Wambach called Cheney from the hospital and told her to start running, because she was going to the Olympics.

And then they won the gold medal.
